Day 3. Antigua – Chichicastenago – Panajachel
After breakfast, we leave Antigua and depart along the Interamerican Highway to discover the Western Highlands of Guatemala, still the most traditional part of the country where people follow traditions and a way of life dating back centuries.
We will visit the colorful market in Chichicastenango where venders and buyers meet from the entire Highland region. Stroll through hundreds of stands and visit the Santo Thomas church, the Calvario church, the local cemetery and the Mayan shrine of Pascual Abaj.
After lunch, we continue our drive to Panajachel, situated at the edge of Lake Atitlán. During the final descend from Solola to Panajachel, experience amazing views of Lake Atitlán.
Day 4. Lake Atitlán
After breakfast, we board a private lancha (motorboat) to explore Lake Atitlan. We will cross the lake to reach the quaint and tranquil town of San Juan la Laguna where people still live the traditional Maya life.
The community in San Juan is organized around cooperatives in traditional textiles, handicrafts, medicinal plants, and organic coffee. We will visit several projects to get an in-depth perspective.
We continue on to the town of Santiago Atitlan, the biggest of the 12 towns around the lake. This Tzutujil stronghold is famous for its colonial church adorned with Mayan elements.
Before heading back to Panajachel, we cross the lake to reach San Antonio Palopo.
Day 5. Panajachel – Iximche – Guatemala City – Flores
During the course of the morning, we will start our way back to the center of the country.
Along the way, in the town of Tecpan we will visit the Iximche ruins. During the post classic period Iximche was the stronghold of the Kakchiquel Maya who controlled large part of the Guatemalan Highlands. It was also the place where the Spanish conquistadores established their first capital, Santiago de los Caballeros.
Experience the remnants of pyramid structures, ball courts and ceremonial altars distributed over 4 different plazas, all located upon the top of a mountain ridge stretched out for almost 1.5 km.
The Iximche site is also still continually active as a sacred ceremonial gathering venue for the Kakchiquel Maya people. With some luck we will encounter a local shaman performing rituals and prayers. Ceremonies can be performed for a variety of reasons; asking for good luck during the planting and harvesting season, or for healing and protection purposes, or for meditation and spiritual renewal.
After the visit, we can enjoy a small lunch in a local restaurant before continuing to Guatemala City. We will take the late afternoon flight from the capital to Flores in the north of Guatemala.
Upon arrival transfer to your hotel overlooking the beautiful Lake Petén Itza.
Day 6. Tikal
